About the brand in a nutshell: FITODROGA DERMOCOSMETIC is a dermocosmetics brand created in Latvia. It was created by two talented and passionate professionals in their field. Inese Vilka holds a master’s degree in food hygiene and has more than 20 years of experience in the development, production, and quality management of cosmetic products. In the product formulas of her brand, she has combined the most valuable and essential ingredients for the skin, giving preference to naturally derived raw materials, and ensures product safety at every stage of development and production. Meanwhile, Rūta Bozoviča, who holds a master’s degree in environmental design, draws on her 10 years of experience in graphic design and visual identity development for the cosmetics industry to promote her brand’s growth and recognition. 2020. In the fall of that year, by participating in a competition, FITODROGA DERMOCOSMETIC joined the professionals at the Jelgava Business Incubator to bring to life an idea they had been nurturing for years: the creation of cosmetics that are particularly gentle on the skin yet highly effective.
What does “dermocosmetics” mean?
In everyday language, dermocosmetics are referred to as therapeutic or pharmacy cosmetics. What sets it apart from mass-market cosmetics is the meticulous dermatological testing of all raw materials—laboratory tests based on rigorous research and analysis. However, it is not only the assurance of the safety of such cosmetics that matters, but also their effectiveness. This is especially true if the product is designed to address specific skin problems, which is why dermocosmetic products typically also contain complexes of specially selected ingredients.
The various lines of dermocosmetic products are designed both to address specific skin problems and for preventive care and daily skin care. People with problem skin should use appropriate dermocosmetic products as a preventive measure; by doing so consistently and carefully over time, it is possible to gradually restore the skin’s natural function. For example, for people who suffer from skin problems such as acne, eczema, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, or extremely dry or sensitive skin, dermocosmetics can help restore their sense of well-being.
It is important to note that dermocosmetic formulas are designed to reduce or completely eliminate ingredients that could irritate the skin. This also applies to fragrances; dermocosmetics do not necessarily have to be fragrance-free, but they do not contain any allergenic ingredients.
Cosmetics specially formulated for sensitive skin
In skincare dermocosmetics, the so-called base ingredients for the daily care of problematic or sensitive skin are incorporated into the products as early as in the formulation stage. For example, the products in the skincare line will have a pH level close to that of the skin’s natural outer layer (which is approximately 6). One of the most common symptoms of problematic skin is a dysfunctional epidermal barrier—in simple terms, dryness— so the products will definitely contain moisturizing ingredients, such as glycerin, which attracts and retains water, as well as a specific brand’s patented active ingredient. Product formulas designed for problematic skin will definitely include an emollient (glycol and glyceryl stearate) to soften dry or flaky skin, while an active ingredient derived from olives, such as squalane, will strengthen the skin’s natural protective barrier.
Dermatologists urge people with sensitive, sun-damaged, or rosacea-prone skin to be especially cautious when choosing products for daily use. A sensation of dryness, inflammation, and redness—all of which are exacerbated by adverse external factors as well as improperly chosen skincare products—can be alleviated by products labeled “dermatologically tested” or “suitable for sensitive skin.” In order to make that claim on the label, the cosmetics manufacturer has conducted tests at an accredited laboratory to verify it. It is just as important to use products from the same brand line, as they contain consistent ingredients that complement each other and create a synergistic effect.
